Chapter 5 - Her Stolen NameElena could not accept it.

Noah was only nine years older than she was. He remembered the night armed men entered their home and took his mother and little sister. He had spent twenty-eight years searching.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
“I needed proof.”
“You watched me marry Adrian. You watched them hurt me.”
“I was inside Victor’s organization. One wrong move would have gotten you killed.”
Every man in Elena’s life had used the same excuse: secrecy was necessary to protect her.
For the first time, she rejected it.
“No more decisions made for me.”
She took the Lazarus hard drive and walked toward the nearest police barricade.
A sniper’s bullet struck the concrete beside her.
Noah dragged her behind the car.
Adrian identified the shooter on the hotel roof. Lily used the second phone to trigger the building’s fire-suppression system, obscuring the sniper’s view with steam.
They escaped through a delivery tunnel.
By dawn, news outlets reported that Victor Sloane had died during a terrorist attack orchestrated by his own security chief. Noah’s face appeared on every screen.
Senator Vale publicly mourned the victims and promised justice.
He had rewritten the story before the smoke cleared.
The group took shelter in Lily’s safe house beneath an abandoned church. There, Elena learned the most disturbing fact yet.
The hard drive contained thousands of identities—but all the files were encrypted.
The only password was stored in Elena’s memory.
As a child, she had undergone experimental conditioning. A sequence of sounds could unlock information planted in her subconscious.
Senator Vale had not raised her out of affection.
He had raised her as a living key.
Adrian played an audio fragment recovered from Victor’s office. A woman hummed a lullaby.
Elena remembered a red door.
A basement.
Her mother screaming.
Then she remembered Senator Vale standing over Evelyn Kane’s body.
“He killed her,” Elena whispered. “My real mother.”
The memory continued.
A second man entered the room and argued with the senator. Younger, frightened, desperate to save the children.
Elena recognized him from old photographs.
Victor Sloane.
The supposed architect of Lazarus had tried to stop the senator.
Victor had not been reaching for a weapon at the gala.
He had been reaching for Elena to warn her.
Adrian had shot the only man who knew how to destroy Project Lazarus.
Then someone knocked three times on the church door.
It was Victor’s private signal.
Noah opened it cautiously.
Victor Sloane stood outside, pale but alive beneath his bloodstained tuxedo.
“You shot my body double,” he told Adrian.

Then he looked at Elena.
“If you want your real mother back, come with me.”
