Chapter 7 - The Sister Who Chose PowerWithin minutes, Elena Vale legally ceased to exist.

Her bank accounts vanished. Her marriage record disappeared. Facial-recognition systems identified her as Mara Kane, a child declared dead decades earlier.

Senator Vale ordered security to arrest her as an impostor.

Elena fled the stage while Adrian blocked the guards. Victor escaped Lily’s weapon and joined Noah underground.

Evelyn was weak but alive.

When mother and daughter finally met, there was no instant embrace. Twenty-eight stolen years stood between them.

Evelyn touched Elena’s cheek.

“I called you Mara because it meant bitter and beloved,” she whispered. “I never stopped looking for you.”

Elena wanted to believe her.

Then Evelyn revealed the final safeguard.

Lazarus could be reversed, but doing so would expose every protected witness alongside every criminal client. Innocent families would be hunted. Children would lose the identities keeping them safe.

Senator Vale had built a moral trap around his empire.

Destroy him, and thousands might die.

Lily entered the chamber.

She admitted making a deal with their father, but insisted she had done it to obtain complete access to Lazarus.

“You trusted men who lied to you,” Lily told Elena. “I chose to become powerful enough that no one could lie to me again.”

“You became him.”

“No. I became what he fears.”

Lily intended to take control of Lazarus and use its secrets to command governments.

Elena refused to help.

Their argument ended when Senator Vale sealed the underground facility and initiated a purge. Water flooded the lower levels. Electrical systems began exploding.

Adrian reached the control room but was shot by Commissioner Reed.

Elena found him bleeding beside the servers.

“Don’t die,” she said.

Adrian smiled weakly. “That sounds almost like forgiveness.”

“It isn’t. It’s an order.”

He handed her a data key containing every secret he had collected during their marriage.

“There’s one file you need to see.”

The recording showed Lily meeting Senator Vale three days before the gala.

Lily said, “Elena will press the button. She always needs to believe she’s saving someone.”

The entire night had been arranged by Lily.

Even the mysterious phone call.

Lily had used Elena to eliminate Victor, expose selected conspirators and gain access to Lazarus.

My in-laws had lived in the house for six months, ever since I bought it as the retirement place they had talked about for years. Frank’s cardiac procedure had frightened everyone, and Diane had begun saying they were tired of winters inland, tired of stairs, tired of being so far from the ocean. I could afford the house. That mattered. I was a commercial novelist, and after fifteen years of inconsistent beginnings, my backlist had finally become predictable enough to create the strange kind of financial stability writers rarely admitted existed. Royalties came from older books, foreign editions, television options that mostly went nowhere, audiobook licensing, and one series that kept selling long after I expected readers to forget it. The down payment came from an investment account I opened before I met Evan, combined with proceeds from intellectual property I had created before our marriage. The deed was in my name. At the time, that had not felt like strategy. It felt like paperwork. I loved Evan. I loved his parents. When I gave Diane the keys, she cried. “This is too much,” she said. I hugged her. “Then enjoy too much.” Frank stood behind her with tears in his eyes and said, “We’ll take care of it like it’s ours.” I thought that was gratitude.
