Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the MirrorElena searched desperately for another exit while Lily struggled against her restraints.

Senator Vale watched from behind a reinforced glass wall.

“You killed Mom too, didn’t you?” Elena shouted.

His smile vanished.

Their mother had supposedly died from an overdose when Elena was seventeen. For years, Senator Vale had portrayed himself as a grieving widower.

“She became unstable,” he said. “She threatened everything we built.”

“We built nothing!”

“You inherited your life from my sacrifices.”

The gas thickened.

Elena’s vision blurred.

Then the lights went out.

Two suppressed gunshots followed. The armed men beside the senator fell.

Noah emerged through a concealed panel and placed an oxygen mask over Elena’s face. Adrian rushed to Lily and freed her.

The senator escaped through the mirrored corridor.

Noah led everyone through the service tunnel as flames spread behind them.

In the parking garage, Adrian finally told Elena the truth.

Six years earlier, Lily had discovered that Senator Vale used humanitarian foundations to identify vulnerable witnesses. Project Lazarus did not merely hide people. It replaced them. Some received new identities. Others were murdered so criminals could assume their names.

Victor funded the technology. Reed falsified the records.

Adrian had been working secretly with federal investigators.

“Why marry me?” Elena demanded. “Was that part of the investigation?”

“At first, yes.”

The answer hurt more than she expected.

“And later?”

“I stayed because I loved you.”

“You hit me tonight.”

Shame crossed his face.

“I grabbed you. Victor’s man struck you before the gala.”

“You let everyone think it was you.”

“I needed Victor to believe I had turned against you.”

Elena stepped back.

A lie told for protection was still a lie. Love without trust could become another kind of prison.

Police vehicles surrounded the hotel, but Lily warned them not to approach.

“Our father controls half the responding officers.”

Noah opened the trunk of a black sedan. Inside were weapons, passports and a hard drive.

Elena recognized the label:

LAZARUS — ORIGINAL SUBJECTS

“Who are the original subjects?” she asked.

Noah looked at her.

“You and Lily.”

The files revealed that Senator Vale’s biological daughters had died twenty-eight years earlier in a house fire.

The girls standing in the garage were not his children.

They were the first two people given stolen identities.

Elena’s earliest memories, her birth certificate and every childhood photograph had been manufactured.

“Who am I?” she whispered.

Noah removed an old photograph from the file.

It showed Elena as a small child beside a woman she had never seen.

On the back was a name:

Evelyn Kane and her daughter, Mara.

Elena looked up.

Noah’s eyes were filled with tears.

“Mara was my little sister.”
