Chapter 9 - The Husband’s Final LieAdrian survived.

Elena waited beside his hospital bed until he opened his eyes.

“You founded Lazarus.”

He did not deny it.

Years earlier, Adrian had designed an identity-protection system for intelligence agents. Evelyn later adapted it for witnesses. Senator Vale and Victor weaponized it without Adrian’s knowledge.

When he discovered the truth, he infiltrated their families and married Elena to regain access.

“But you fell in love with me,” Elena said bitterly.

“Yes.”

“Is that supposed to make everything better?”

“No. It makes what I did worse.”

Adrian admitted manipulating the events at the gala. He had arranged for Elena to receive the phone because only her biometric response could activate Evelyn’s separation protocol.

He believed Elena would make the moral choice no one else could.

“You gambled my life.”

“I gambled everything.”

“You never trusted me with the truth.”

“I trusted who you were. I was afraid the truth would change you.”

Elena stood.

“That was never your decision.”

She removed her wedding ring and placed it on the table.

Federal agents arrested Adrian for his role in creating the original technology. Senator Vale, Commissioner Reed and dozens of officials were charged.

Victor disappeared.

Evelyn entered protective custody with Noah.

For the first time, Elena—now legally Mara Kane—was free.

Three months later, she testified before an international tribunal. Her evidence dismantled the surviving Lazarus network.

The world celebrated her as a hero.

But Lily remained missing.

One evening, Mara received a package containing her old black gala dress. The bloodstain had been cleaned away.

Inside the box was a photograph of Lily standing beside Victor Sloane.

On the back, Lily had written:

You exposed the clients. You never asked who bought the system.

Mara examined the photograph under ultraviolet light.

A list of coordinates appeared.

They pointed not to a criminal compound, but to a government facility beneath Geneva.

The following morning, news channels announced that Lily Vale had been found dead.

Mara knew immediately that the body was not her sister.

Lazarus had created one last replacement.

Someone had stolen Lily’s identity—and was walking toward Mara’s front door.
