Chapter 10 - The Woman in the Black DressThe visitor looked exactly like Lily.

Same face. Same voice. Same scar above the eyebrow.

But Mara noticed one mistake.

Lily always entered a room by checking the windows first. This woman watched the exits.

“You’re not my sister.”

The woman smiled.

“No. I’m the reason your sister needed a new identity.”

Her name was Claire Voss—Victor’s biological daughter and the first adult subject successfully reconstructed by Lazarus. Surgical alteration, false records and behavioral conditioning had allowed her to become almost anyone.

Lily had copied Claire’s face for the body discovered by police.

The real Lily was alive in Geneva.

Claire revealed that the Lazarus buyers were not governments or criminals. They were a private alliance of the world’s wealthiest families. For decades, they had replaced troublesome heirs, witnesses and political candidates with obedient doubles.

Senator Vale had never controlled the project.

He was merely its administrator.

Mara traveled to Geneva with Noah and Evelyn. Adrian, awaiting trial, supplied intelligence in exchange for no promise of freedom.

Beneath the government facility, they discovered hundreds of identity chambers.

In the central control room stood Lily and Victor.

Lily had not come to seize Lazarus.

She had come to destroy its buyers.

Victor confessed that he was not a billionaire named Victor Sloane. The real Victor had died twenty years earlier. He was a replacement who eventually rebelled against the people who installed him.

Everyone connected to Lazarus had been both criminal and victim.

The alliance initiated a facility-wide purge. Noah evacuated the prisoners while Evelyn disabled the conditioning system.

Mara and Lily reached the central server, but destroying it required someone to remain behind and manually hold the cooling system open.

Evelyn chose to stay.

“No,” Mara pleaded. “I just found you.”

Evelyn placed her hands against her daughter’s face.

“They stole your childhood. Don’t let them steal your future too.”

The sisters escaped seconds before the facility collapsed.

Thousands of stolen identities were restored. The alliance’s leaders were exposed. Victor surrendered and agreed to testify.

Adrian received a reduced sentence for dismantling the system he had helped create. Mara visited him once.

“I did love you,” she told him.

“I know.”

“But love cannot survive where truth is treated like a privilege.”

She left her wedding ring behind and never returned.

One year later, Mara, Lily and Noah created the Kane Foundation to reunite Lazarus survivors with their families. Evelyn’s sacrifice became the first line of its charter:

No person belongs to the story someone else writes for them.

Mara believed the nightmare was over.

Then, during the foundation’s opening gala, she saw a woman standing beneath the chandelier in a black one-shoulder dress.

The woman had Mara’s face.

She held a phone to her ear.

When Mara’s own phone rang, she answered slowly.

The woman across the ballroom smiled.

“You exposed Lazarus,” she said. “But you never proved which one of us is the original.”

The ballroom doors locked.

Mara looked at Lily.

Lily looked terrified.

Then Evelyn Kane—officially dead for one year—stepped onto the stage.

She was alive.

And she was holding the master key.

“Good evening, daughters,” Evelyn said as every screen illuminated. “It’s time you learned why Lazarus was really created.”

Mara stared at the woman she had watched die.

Only then did she understand the final truth:

Project Lazarus had never been designed to replace the dead.

It had been designed to make death reversible.

And somewhere inside the building, every person they had lost was waiting to come home.
