Chapter 15 - The Shadow of the PastThe tranquility of the Ríos estate was shattered two weeks later by an unexpected visitor.
It was late Tuesday evening. A sleek, tinted black sedan pulled up unannounced to the security gates of the San Pedro Garza García estate. The intercom buzzed sharply.
Valeria, who was reviewing household inventory in the study, heard the private security detail exchange tense words over the radio.
Seconds later, Alejandro strode into the study, his face tight with tension. "Valeria. Come with me. Someone is at the gate, and they're asking for you by name."
Valeria frowned, following him down the grand staircase into the foyer.
Standing just inside the open front doors was a man in an impeccably tailored grey suit. He had silver-streaked hair, cold blue eyes, and an air of quiet, dangerous authority that made the hairs on the back of Valeria's neck stand up.
"Alejandro," the man said smoothly, ignoring the businessman entirely as his eyes locked onto Valeria. "And you must be Valeria. Teresa always underestimated your background. A pity. If she had paid closer attention to your former career in forensic auditing, none of this would have happened."
Valeria’s breath hitched. She stepped back instinctively, her hand brushing the edge of the console table.

"Who are you?" Alejandro demanded, stepping defensively in front of Valeria.
The man smiled thinly. "My name is Donato Rossi. And Teresa was merely a branch of a much larger tree. Now that she's out of the picture... someone has to settle the accounts."
