Chapter 6 - The Struggle in the DarkBefore Teresa could recover and adjust her aim, Alejandro moved with terrifying predatory speed. He slammed into her body like a freight train, tackling her away from the doorway.

The gun went skidding across the polished hardwood floor, sliding into the dark hallway outside.

Teresa, despite her refined appearance, fought like a cornered animal, scratching, biting, and clawing at Alejandro’s face. "Get off me, you fool!" she shrieked, driving her knee hard into his stomach.

Alejandro groaned, doubling over, but managed to pin her arms against the floor. "Valeria! Grab the journal! Call the police!"

Valeria didn't need to be told twice. She grabbed Mateo, who was trembling violently, and rushed out into the hallway. Her hands shook as she pulled her smartphone from her pocket, jabbing at the screen to dial emergency services.

"Monterrey police, what is your emergency?" a dispatcher’s voice crackled through the speaker.

"Send units to the Ríos mansion in San Pedro Garza García immediately! We have an armed intruder, a murder confession, and—"

Before Valeria could finish her sentence, a heavy hand clamped over her mouth from behind.

A sharp, cold blade pressed against her throat.

"Drop the phone, little maid," a second voice hissed right beside her ear.

Valeria froze. Emerging from the shadows of the adjacent guest suite was a man—a large, broad-shouldered man with a scar across his jaw. One of Teresa’s accomplices, lurking in the mansion all along.

Mateo let out a piercing shriek as the man grabbed his arm, jerking the boy away from Valeria's side.
