Chapter 1 - The Outcast BrideClare stepped forward with that infuriatingly placid expression she always wore—the look of a woman who felt entirely at home in spaces where Emma was merely a tolerated guest. Her blonde hair fell in soft, premeditated waves over a cashmere sweater that cost more than Emma’s monthly grocery budget.

"Emma, darling, don't make a scene," Clare murmured, her tone dripping with patronizing sisterly concern. "Ethan and I were just trying to save you from the stress of the head table. You’ve always been so sensitive about large groups, and Table Nineteen is so cozy and quiet. Besides, family logistics are complicated."

"Complicated," Emma repeated, her voice remarkably steady despite the roaring blood in her ears. "So complicated that the bride is relocated behind a fire exit while my fiancé’s 'best friend' takes the seat of honor next to him."

Ethan finally walked over, his face flushing with irritation rather than guilt. He sighed heavily, rubbing the bridge of his nose as if Emma were a child throwing a tantrum over a seating chart.

"See? This is what I mean, Emma," Ethan said, throwing his hands up. "You’re turning a logistical seating adjustment into a personal attack. Clare only rearranged it because my mother wanted the family close. It’s just a chair. Why do you always have to make everything so dramatic?"

Emma looked from Ethan to Clare, and then to Margaret Whitmore, who was watching with a cool, triumphant smirk. Five days before the wedding, the illusion shattered entirely. This wasn't a mistake. It was a test—and a preview of the life they had planned for her.

"You're right, Ethan," Emma said quietly, sliding the ivory place card back onto the linen of Table Nineteen. "It is just a chair. And you won't have to worry about me sitting in it."
