Chapter 4 - The Best Friend’s True AgendaWhile Ethan scrambled to dress and figure out how his empire was collapsing before breakfast, Clare Hale sat in her high-end loft sipping artisanal coffee, scrolling through a tablet with a smug smile.

Her phone rang. It was Ethan, his voice frantic and breathless.

"Clare! Did you know about this? The company accounts are frozen! Emma’s lawyers just slapped us with an injunction!"

Clare took a slow sip of her coffee, her voice remaining sickeningly calm. "Calm down, Ethan. It's just a tantrum. She's upset about the seating chart. Give her twenty-four hours to cool down, send her some flowers, and she’ll fold. She always folds."

"No, you don't understand!" Ethan yelled over the phone. "This isn't a wedding argument! The corporate holding trust is in her name! She owns sixty percent of the underlying equity!"

Clare’s coffee cup stopped inches from her mouth. Her eyes widened. "What did you say?"

"She owns the company, Clare!" Ethan screamed. "I told her she was a placeholder, I told her she didn't belong at the head table—and now she’s taken the whole damn building down with her!"

Clare’s phone slipped from her hand, clattering against the kitchen counter as the full realization hit her: she had hitched her wagon to a man who didn't even own the horse he was riding.
