Her phone buzzed continuously in her pocket—a barrage of text messages from Ethan.

Ethan: Emma, stop being ridiculous. Come back inside. Ethan: Everyone is looking at us. Don't embarrass me like this. Ethan: Answer your phone!

She didn't answer. Instead, she hailed a cab and directed the driver toward her apartment.

When she unlocked the door, the stillness of the apartment hit her. It was her apartment—the lease was in her name, signed three years before Ethan had even moved to Boston. For months, she had been packing her life into boxes to move into his luxury Back Bay townhouse.

Ethan liked to project the image of a self-made tech executive whose venture firm was soaring. But reality told a different story. The catering deposit, the hotel ballroom contract, the custom floral arrangements, and even the initial seed funding for Ethan’s startup two years ago had been paid entirely from an inheritance left by Emma’s grandfather—backed by a legal agreement naming Emma as the primary stakeholder.

"Marcus?" Emma said when the line picked up. "It's Emma. The wedding is off. I need you to initiate the asset freeze on Walker Tech immediately."
