Chapter 13 - Clare’s Desperate ExitAcross town, in a high-end luxury loft overlooking the Back Bay railroad tracks, Clare Hale was frantically packing her designer wardrobe into oversized suitcases.

Her phone buzzed incessantly against the marble kitchen island. It was her commercial real estate landlord demanding immediate payment for three months of back-rent on her boutique design studio.

"I told you, the wire transfer will clear by tomorrow morning!" Clare snapped into the phone, her voice cracking under the weight of sheer panic.

"Mrs. Hale, your corporate accounts have been flagged by the federal prosecutor’s office under an expanded conspiracy and kickback probe," the landlord replied coldly. "Your lease is terminated. Vacate the premises by 5:00 PM today, or we will remove your property to the curb."

The line disconnected with a sharp click.

Clare stared at the phone, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. She had spent years positioning herself as an untouchable high-society maven, charming wealthy executives, and sliding into places of privilege by hitching her wagon to men like Ethan.

She had thought Ethan was her ticket to permanent luxury. Instead, he had been a sinking anchor, and her own hidden involvement in funneling unverified expense funds had left her entirely legally exposed.

There was no rescue coming. No wealthy benefactor stepping in to save her. With a choked sob, Clare zipped her final suitcase, grabbed her coat, and fled down the back service stairs, desperately trying to disappear before the federal marshals arrived.
