Chapter 16 - Whispers in the YardBack within the gray perimeter walls of the federal correctional facility, the afternoon recreation hour drove inmates out into the asphalt exercise yard.

Ethan Walker sat alone on a concrete bench near the chain-link fence, watching a solitary bird circle above the razor wire. His world had shrunk to the dimensions of a gray cell, a metal bunk, and the monotonous routine of institutional survival.

A fellow inmate, a former stockbroker doing time for securities fraud, dropped onto the bench beside him, tossing a crumpled copy of a two-week-old financial magazine onto Ethan’s lap.

"Hey, Walker. Look at page twelve. Isn't that your old company?" the inmate asked lazily.

Ethan slowly picked up the magazine. His fingers brushed the glossy cover.

There, splashed across the page in vibrant, confident color, was a feature profile on Emma Carter. The headline read: The Architect of Integrity: How Emma Carter Built a Tech Empire on Trust and Equity.

The accompanying photograph showed Emma standing radiant and smiling on the sunlit terrace of the newly opened Carter-Community Center, surrounded by smiling employees and local families, with the Boston skyline shining brilliantly behind her.

Ethan stared at the image until the ink blurred behind hot, uninvited tears. He remembered the night at the Harborview Hotel—the seating chart he had let Clare manipulate, the ivory place card tucked behind a ballroom column near the fire exit, and the arrogant words he had thrown at the woman who had quietly built his entire world.

He had wanted a trophy wife and a high-society facade. Instead, he had thrown away the only genuine love and unyielding support he would ever know.
