Chapter 21 - The Cold RealityEmma did not stand up. She did not offer Margaret a seat. She simply folded her hands on her mahogany desk and waited.

"The assisted living facility is raising its rates," Margaret stammered, tears welling in her eyes. "Ethan’s legal fees drained everything before his conviction. I have nothing left, Emma. The state is threatening to move me to a public ward. I know we had our... differences, but you are a billionaire now. A few thousand dollars a month would be nothing to you."

Emma looked at the woman who had actively conspired to humiliate her in front of three hundred guests.

"Differences, Margaret?" Emma’s voice was soft, but it carried the chilling weight of absolute authority. "A difference is a disagreement over floral arrangements. What you and Ethan did was a calculated attempt to break my spirit so you could drain my family’s trust fund without interference."

"I was blind!" Margaret wept, stepping closer to the desk. "He was my son! I just wanted what was best for him!"

"No, Margaret. You wanted what was best for you," Emma corrected evenly. "You wanted the status, the country club dinners, and the illusion of superiority. And you were perfectly willing to let me sit behind a concrete column in the dark to maintain it."

Emma pressed a button on her desk phone. "Security, please escort Mrs. Whitmore out."

"Emma, please! You have a good heart!" Margaret begged as two security guards entered the office.

"I do have a good heart," Emma replied, her gaze unyielding. "That’s why this company funds three public housing wards in Worcester. You will be very well taken care of there. Goodbye, Margaret."
