Chapter 27 - Clare's Final MistakeWhile Emma was planning a future built on love, Clare Hale was making a desperate final gamble.

Unable to survive on minimum wage, Clare had attempted a rudimentary wire-fraud scam, using her old high-society contacts to solicit fake donations for a non-existent Boston charity. It was a sloppy, desperate con, and it unraveled within three weeks.

When the NYPD knocked on the door of her Queens apartment, Clare didn't even try to run.

She was handcuffed and led out into the pouring rain, her face pale and hollow. As the police cruiser drove her toward the precinct, it passed a massive digital billboard in Times Square.

The billboard featured a glowing advertisement for The Carter-Vance Foundation's new global initiative. Emma Carter’s face smiled down at the city, radiant, untouchable, and victorious.

Clare squeezed her eyes shut, turning her head away from the window as the cold, unforgiving reality of a prison sentence finally locked its jaws around her.
