Chapter 16 - The Trap is SetThree days later, Arthur Sterling sat in his lavish corner office in Chicago City Hall, swirling a glass of scotch as he gazed out over the city skyline. He felt invincible. Jonathan Whitmore was safely behind bars, Victoria Hale was neutralized, and the land under The Horizon Center was prime for a hostile takeover once Claire’s company collapsed under financial pressure.

His private phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. He picked it up with an arrogant smirk.

"Tell me the designer girl handed over the files," Sterling said smoothly.

"She didn't hand them over to me, Commissioner," a cold, unfamiliar voice replied from the other end.

Sterling’s smirk vanished. "Who is this?"

"This is Claire Whitmore," the voice answered clearly. "And I believe you have some property belonging to my company—not to mention a few questions to answer regarding municipal extortion."

Sterling slammed his glass down, spilling scotch across the desk. "You must be out of your mind, Mrs. Whitmore. You have no proof of anything. If you try to pull a stunt like this, I’ll bury your company with city code violations before the week is out."

"You can try," Claire replied calmly. "But by the time you finish your morning coffee, federal agents will already be serving search warrants at your home, your campaign office, and your private bank lockers. Check your email, Commissioner."

The line went dead. Trembling with sudden rage and panic, Sterling opened his laptop. Sitting in his inbox was an encrypted legal brief containing every single wire transfer, forged signature, and kickback receipt linking him directly to the multi-million dollar corruption ring.
