Chapter 6 - The Ultimate BetrayalWhile Jonathan sat sweating over the confession document, Victoria Hale was downstairs in the lobby, desperately trying to flag down a cab and distance herself from the unfolding disaster. Her phone buzzed continuously with notifications from her agency, her social circle, and her bank.

As she pushed through the revolving glass doors into the freezing Chicago air, a sleek black sedan pulled up sharply beside her. The rear window rolled down, revealing Marcus Vance.

"Miss Hale," Marcus called out smoothly. "Going somewhere?"

Victoria crossed her arms, shivering in her winter-white dress. "I have nothing to say to you or Claire Whitmore. I was just an employee caught in his web."

"Is that why you personally funneled twenty-five thousand dollars of corporate expense funds into your boutique design account last month?" Marcus asked, holding up a printed bank statement through the cracked window.

Victoria’s face drained of all color. "That was... Jonathan authorized that as a branding bonus."

"Jonathan authorized a lot of things using funds that legally belonged to the employee trust," Marcus said with a thin smile. "My client has decided to include you as a co-defendant in the civil conspiracy suit unless you cooperate fully with the federal investigators regarding Jonathan’s offshore accounts."

Victoria looked back at the towering glass skyscraper, realizing she had hitched her wagon to a sinking ship that was now dragging her down into the abyss. She slowly opened the car door and stepped inside.
