Chapter 4 - The Public FallBy 2:00 PM, the crisis had breached the corporate firewall and spilled onto the public stage. Headlines began flashing across financial news tickers in downtown Chicago: Whitmore Construction Assets Frozen Amid Explosive Fraud Allegations.

Derek Walsh rushed back into Jonathan’s office without knocking, holding an iPad with a live broadcast from local news station WGN.

"Sir, you need to see this. Reporters are gathering outside the main lobby. And... the mayor's office just issued a statement suspending our bid for the waterfront development pending a federal financial review."

Jonathan slammed his fist onto the desk, rattling the half-empty champagne glasses. "Who leaked the audit? Only a handful of people had access to those internal numbers!"

"It wasn't a leak, Mr. Whitmore," a calm, chilling voice echoed from the doorway.

Jonathan and Victoria spun around. Standing in the executive doorway was Detective Sarah Chen of the Chicago Police Department’s White-Collar Crime Division, flanked by two uniformed officers.

"Jonathan Whitmore?" Detective Chen asked, holding up a manila folder. "You’re being formally served with a criminal complaint filed by Claire Whitmore, detailing industrial forgery, embezzlement of employee pension funds, and wire fraud. You need to come with us."

Victoria slowly backed away toward the private elevator, pressing her back against the wall as if trying to make herself invisible. "I don't know him," she whispered to the officers. "I’m just a consultant. I just got here this morning."

Jonathan stared at the steel handcuffs dangling from Detective Chen’s hand, finally understanding the true magnitude of what Claire had engineered. She hadn't just filed for divorce; she had executed a flawless ambush.
