Chapter 18 - Echoes from a CellBack in the federal correctional facility, the television in the common area blared the afternoon news report. Jonathan Whitmore sat at a plastic table, staring blankly at the screen as anchor after anchor detailed the spectacular downfall of Arthur Sterling and the complete vindication of Whitmore-Bennett Holdings.

The footage cut to an interview on the steps of the courthouse, where Claire stood radiant and composed, surrounded by her executive team and smiling employees, addressing a wall of microphones.

“Today marks a new beginning for our company,” Claire’s voice echoed clearly through the prison television speakers. “A foundation built on integrity cannot be shaken, no matter how deep the corruption goes.”

A fellow inmate sitting nearby chuckled, nudging Jonathan’s shoulder. "Hey, Whitmore isn't that your ex-wife? Man, she completely cleaned house. Took down your corrupt buddies in city hall and everything."

Jonathan didn't answer. He stared at the screen, watching the woman he had underestimated, betrayed, and discarded now standing at the absolute pinnacle of success—while he sat forgotten in a gray jumpsuit behind rows of steel bars.

He reached slowly into his pocket, pulling out the folded photograph of Claire and their baby girl standing proudly on the terrace of The Horizon Center. The words on the back burned into his mind: Thank you for the foundation.
