Chapter 5 - Behind Closed DoorsIn a secure, confidential conference room at Marcus Vance’s law firm, Jonathan sat across the table, handcuffed to the bolted-down metal chair. The arrogance that had defined his career was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, hollow exhaustion.

The door opened, and Claire walked in. She wasn't alone; she was accompanied by Marcus and an independent court-appointed forensic auditor. She moved with steady, unhurried grace, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite her estranged husband.

Jonathan looked at her, his eyes bloodshot and pleading. "Claire... please. Drop the criminal charges. We can handle this in family court. We can divide the assets quietly. Think of the baby—our child."

Claire looked down at her stomach before raising her eyes to meet his. Her gaze was as cold and sharp as the Chicago winter outside.

"You embezzled from the employee profit-sharing fund, Jonathan," Claire said evenly, her voice devoid of emotion. "You forged my signature on documents that could have landed me in federal prison if the authorities discovered the fraud first. You thought you could push me into a corner while you entertained your mistress in our office."

"I made mistakes," Jonathan choked out, leaning forward despite the handcuffs. "I was under pressure with the new development. Victoria meant nothing—she was just a distraction."

"Victoria is the least of your problems," Claire replied, sliding a single document across the table. It was a complete waiver of corporate rights and a confession of liability. "Sign this. You hand over 100% control of Whitmore Construction to the employee trust and my custody holdings. In exchange, I won't oppose your legal counsel's plea for a mitigated sentence on the white-collar charges."

Jonathan stared at the paper. Signing it meant total annihilation. Refusing it meant spending the next ten to fifteen years behind bars.
