Chapter 4 - The Midnight Code Red“Code Red. Obstetric Emergency, Room 412. Code Red.”

The overhead speakers blared the chilling announcement just as I was finishing my shift paperwork. My blood ran cold. Room 412 was my private on-call room, where I had left my medical bag and my personal phone.

Before I could stand up, my pager buzzed violently against my belt.

Dr. Brooks. Immediate assistance required in ER Triage. Mass casualty incident incoming.

Panic gripped the floor. Nurses scrambled, rolling out trauma carts and tearing open sterile packaging. I bolted down the stairs, ignoring the dull, persistent ache in my lower back. At seven months pregnant, working a 16-hour shift was already a gamble; adding a mass casualty event was pure Russian roulette.

The automatic ambulance bay doors blew open, and the night air rushed in, carrying the wailing sirens of three different county ambulances.

"What do we have?!" I shouted, grabbing a clipboard from a trembling intern.

"Multi-vehicle pileup on the Westside Highway!" the paramedic yelled over the screaming sirens, wheeling in a blood-soaked gurney. "A semi-truck jackknifed into a luxury sedan! We have three criticals, two delayed! The driver of the sedan is unresponsive—heavy internal bleeding, crush injuries to the pelvis!"

I stepped up to the gurney to take charge, ready to bark orders for intubation and fluid resuscitation.

The overhead trauma light flickered on, casting a harsh, blinding glare over the patient's face.

My breath caught in my throat. The clipboard slipped from my fingers, clattering loudly against the linoleum floor.

It wasn't just any luxury sedan.
