Chapter 12 - The Healing Hands at Room 12Back at the private recovery wing of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, the morning sun poured through the large bay windows, casting warm golden patterns across Emily’s quilt. For the first time in her fifteen years of life, she woke up without a phantom knot of dread twisting in her stomach.

There were no heavy footsteps pacing down the hallway. There was no cold, critical voice waiting outside her door to tell her she was faking her illness.

"Morning, sleepyhead," I said softly, stepping into the room with a tray holding a cup of warm herbal tea and fresh fruit.

Emily pushed herself up against the pillows, a genuine, radiant smile stretching across her face. "Mom, I actually slept. For eight full hours. I didn't dream about the basement or... or him."

My heart swelled, though a sharp protective instinct still prickled beneath my ribs. I set the tray down and sat beside her on the edge of the mattress, running my fingers gently through her brown curls. "You never have to worry about him again, Em. Agent Vance confirmed that his assets are completely frozen, and he's locked away in a federal facility where he can never hurt us."

Emily looked down at her hands, tracing the faint outline of an old scar on her wrist—a reminder of an accidental fall down the stairs that Michael had conveniently brushed off years ago. "Mom... do you remember what I screamed in the ER?"

The air in the room seemed to drop by ten degrees. I nodded slowly. "You said, 'He knows why it hurts.' At the time, I thought you just meant the appendicitis."

"I didn't mean the appendix," Emily whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she looked up into my eyes. "A week before we came here, I heard Dad talking on his burner phone in the garage. He wasn't just poisoning my water, Mom. He was talking to someone about a 'secondary shipment.' He said if anything happened to him, 'the vault under the lake cabin would automatically trigger the release of the rest of the files.'"

I froze. The lake cabin—a dilapidated property in northern Wisconsin that Michael had forbidden us from ever visiting, claiming it was structurally unsafe.

"Did you tell Agent Vance about this?" I asked urgently.

Emily shook her head. "I didn't remember it clearly until last night. The fever made everything a blur. But Mom... I think there's a reason he was so desperate to get away that night. He wasn't just running from the Feds. He was hiding something much worse."
