Chapter 4 - The Detective at the Door"Mrs. Miller? Or should I say, Mrs. Bennett?"

I jolted, dropping my phone onto my lap. A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stood over me, holding an open leather badge wallet. It read: Special Agent Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I... I'm Sarah," I stammered, clutching the backpack to my chest.

"I know who you are, Sarah. We’ve been tracking the subject known as Michael Bennett—real name Jonathan Miller—for over eight months," Agent Vance said, pulling up a chair beside me. His eyes were sharp, assessing every tremor in my hands. "We saw him try to force his way into the ER ten minutes ago. Our surveillance team intercepted him in the parking garage. He’s currently in custody."

"In custody?" I breathed out a ragged laugh mixed with sheer disbelief. "You caught him?"

"We caught him violating federal probation terms and attempting to flee the jurisdiction with liquid assets," Vance replied gravely. "He liquidated your joint savings account at 2:00 a.m. tonight. Every single cent you and your parents worked for is gone."

The reality crashed down on me like a tidal wave. I was penniless, sitting in a county hospital while my daughter fought for her life in surgery, married to a phantom who had stolen our entire existence.

"Agent Vance," I whispered, holding up the USB drive. "He didn't just steal our money. He’s been poisoning Emily. Look at these medical files. That’s why she was vomiting for three days. It wasn't just appendicitis—it was cumulative toxicity."

Agent Vance’s expression hardened instantly. He took the flash drive from my trembling fingers, plugged it into his secure tablet, and scrolled through the encrypted files.

"My God," Vance muttered, jaw clenching. "This changes everything. This isn't just financial fraud anymore. This is attempted homicide."
