Chapter 9 - The Trial of Jonathan MillerSix months later, the federal courtroom in downtown Chicago was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs blinded the steps outside as media outlets dubbed the case "The Monster in the Mirror."

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a crisp navy blazer, my head held high. Beside me sat Emily, her posture straight, vibrant, and glowing with health. The scars from her surgery had faded, but the strength in her eyes was permanent.

When the bailiff called all rise, Judge Margaret Vance entered the courtroom with an expression carved from granite.

The jury foreman stood up, holding a heavy manila envelope containing the verdict.

"On the first count of identity theft and federal wire fraud, how do you find the defendant, Jonathan Vance Miller?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

"On the second count of child endangerment and severe bodily poisoning..."

"Guilty."

"On the third count of attempted first-degree homicide..."

"Guilty on all charges."

Michael—sitting at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit—didn't scream this time. He didn't threaten. He simply stared blankly at the polished mahogany table as the federal marshals stepped behind his chair, snapped heavy steel cuffs around his wrists, and dragged him away toward a lifetime behind bars.
