Chapter 19 - The RebuildingThe transition wasn't easy, but freedom never is.

With the assistance of federal victim-support programs and the return of our legitimate assets recovered from Jonathan’s frozen accounts, Emily and I moved into a bright, sunlit apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.

The buzzing fluorescent lights and bleach-stained bathroom floors of our old life were replaced by the warm aroma of vanilla candles, fresh coffee, and laughter echoing down the hallway.

Emily had returned to school, her grades soaring, her cheeks flushed with natural health now that her body was completely free of the toxic compounds Jonathan had slowly poisoned her with. The trauma of the past was still there, woven into the fabric of our memories, but it no longer held power over our future.

One evening, as we sat together on the living room sofa wrapping blankets around our shoulders and watching the sun dip below the city skyline, Emily looked over at me with a soft smile.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Do you think we'll ever look back and be afraid again?"

May you like

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against my chest, watching the golden light dance across the water outside.

"No, baby," I whispered softly. "Because we know how strong we really are."
