Folder after folder opened up, revealing a complex web of international bank accounts, shell companies, and—most disturbingly—surveillance files on dozens of prominent public figures, judges, and law enforcement officials.
Jonathan hadn't just been a common fraudster. He had been a blackmailer, systematically gathering compromising data to insulate himself from prosecution.
"Look at this," Vance whispered, clicking on a sub-folder labeled Project Janus.
Inside were scanned copies of birth certificates, adoption papers, and social security numbers belonging to over fifty children and families across the Midwest—families whose lives had been upended or completely erased.
"He was running an identity-harvesting ring," I realized, a cold shiver running down my spine. "When people fell into financial ruin or disappeared, he absorbed their legal existence, piece by piece, until he became untouchable."
Suddenly, a chat window popped up on the screen. It wasn't automated. It was an active, encrypted peer-to-peer connection originating from inside the federal penitentiary’s secure visitor terminal.
A text message appeared in the dialogue box:

“You think you won, Sarah? You only found the decoy server. The real master key is already on its way to Zurich. By morning, everything you love will be wiped out.”
The sender ID flashed: INMATE_M_9924.
