Chapter 7 - The Miracle Behind the GlassBack at the county hospital, the blinking red light above OR 3 finally stopped.

The heavy double doors swung open, and the lead surgeon emerged, peeling off his blood-spattered surgical gloves. He looked exhausted, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes, but as he pulled down his sterile mask, a tired, genuine smile broke across his face.

I scrambled up from the floor, my legs shaking violently. "Is... is she alive?"

"It was touch and go for twenty minutes, Mrs. Bennett," the surgeon said, letting out a long, heavy sigh of relief. "We managed to flush the infection and repair the tissue damage. She is stable, and her blood panels show that her body is already beginning to clear the toxic agents once we administered heavy-metal chelation therapy during the procedure."

I buried my face in my hands and wept—not tears of fear, but tears of pure, unadulterated liberation.

"Can I see her?" I choked out.

"Recovery unit, Bed 12. She’s still sleeping off the anesthesia, but she’s going to make it."

When I walked into the recovery cubicle, Emily looked pale against the white pillow, but the gray, ashen hue of impending death was gone from her cheeks. Her chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm.

I pulled a chair close to her bed, took her small, warm hand in mine, and pressed it against my cheek.

"We're free, baby," I whispered into the quiet room. "You never have to be afraid again."
