Chapter 2 - The Bleeding LedgerWhile the surgical team prepped Operating Room 3, hospital security escorted Michael to the waiting area, though not before he hurled a final, chilling threat over his shoulder: "Sarah, you will pay for this mutiny. Everything you think you know is a lie!"

I sat beside Emily’s rolling gurney, holding her ice-cold hand. The trauma of the past three days had drained every ounce of color from her face. As the nurses wheeled her toward the double doors of the OR, Emily’s fingers suddenly tightened around my wrist with surprising strength.

"Mom," she whispered, her voice raspy. "Look in the lining of my black backpack. The zipper pocket behind the textbooks."

"Save your energy, sweetie. You're going to sleep soon, and everything will be fine," I murmured, brushing sweat-damp curls from her forehead.

"No, Mom. Listen to me!" She coughed, a sharp, painful wince crossing her features. "Dad hasn't been going to his late-night office meetings for months. I heard him on the phone in the garage. He’s selling... he’s selling our house, our savings, everything. And he has another phone. A burner phone with pictures of..."

Her eyes rolled back slightly as the anesthesia mask was gently lowered over her face by the attending anesthetist. "Count backward from ten, Emily," the nurse instructed soothingly.

Emily's lips moved beneath the clear plastic, whispering one last fragment before the sedative took hold: "He knows why it hurts..."

The doors swung shut. The red light flickered on: SURGERY IN PROGRESS.

I sat alone on the hard plastic chair, my mind racing. I pulled out Emily’s battered black backpack from beneath the chair. My fingers fumbled with the hidden zipper in the back lining. Inside, tucked away beneath spare chargers and broken hair ties, was a small, heavy black USB drive and a folded, yellowed piece of paper.

I unfolded the paper under the harsh fluorescent lights of the corridor. It was a birth certificate.

Not Emily’s.
