Chapter 8 - The Hidden VaultThree days later, while Emily slept safely in a secure VIP room provided by federal protection services, Agent Vance escorted me back to our suburban home to retrieve essential personal belongings.

The house was dead quiet. Yellow police tape crisscrossed the front porch.

Inside, the illusion of our perfect, suffocating family life was stripped bare. Vance led me down to the basement, where a heavy iron padlock hung from a utility closet door that Michael had always kept strictly forbidden.

"We searched the main house, but this reinforced vault requires a biometric code," Vance said, shining his flashlight on the digital keypad. "Do you know the combination?"

I stared at the keypad. For fifteen years, Michael had told me that room was just full of old tax records and broken tools. But looking at the blinking red light, I remembered the numbers Emily used to tap out on her desk when she was stressed—her birthday combined with the day we adopted our rescue dog.

I pressed the digits: 1-0-1-2-0-1.

Click.

The heavy steel door swung open with a pneumatic hiss.

Inside wasn't old tax files. It was an alchemist’s den of control and paranoia. Rows of labeled glass bottles containing heavy metal poisons sat neatly on metal shelves. Next to them were dozens of hidden surveillance hard drives—recording every room in our house, capturing every breath, every tear, and every whispered conversation we had ever had.

And right in the center, resting on a velvet pedestal, was a stack of cash totaling over five hundred thousand dollars in untraceable bearer bonds.
