Chapter 14 - The Countdown in the Timber Lodge"Everybody back! It's a dead-man's switch!" Agent Vance shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me violently backward toward the open doorway.

The tactical team scrambled, diving behind reinforced timber support beams as the digital timer continued its relentless descent. 03:45:12... 03:45:11...

"What does that mean?" I stammered, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs as I peered around Vance's shoulder.

"It means Jonathan set a remote synchronization protocol," Vance cursed, pulling out his encrypted tactical tablet and frantically tapping commands. "If his biometric check-in at the federal penitentiary isn't verified by a secure digital handshake every twenty-four hours—or if someone tries to breach this physical network without the master cryptographic key—this entire cabin, along with every server inside it, is programmed to self-destruct via a high-yield thermite charge."

"Can you disarm it?"

"I'm trying, but he’s using military-grade encryption," Vance muttered, sweat beading on his forehead as lines of green code scrolled across his tablet screen. Time remaining: 02:15:30...

My mind raced back to Emily’s words in the hospital room. 'He said if anything happened to him, the vault under the lake cabin would automatically trigger...' This wasn't just a secure file server. It was the master archive of every fraudulent identity, every smuggled asset, and every victim Jonathan had exploited over the past two decades. If it burned, thousands of people would never find closure, and the full extent of his syndicate would remain buried forever.

"Agent Vance," I said, my voice dropping to a calm, deadly serious tone. "When Michael used to lock himself in his home office, he didn't use complex random passwords. He was arrogant. He used dates of personal milestones that he thought proved his superiority."

Vance paused, looking up from his screen. "What kind of milestones?"

"The day he successfully transferred his first illegal funds under the stolen name: October twelfth, twenty-four years ago."

Vance’s fingers flew across the tablet keyboard, typing in the sequence: 1012-02.

The red LED numbers on the countdown clock suddenly blinked... and froze at 00:01:14.

A soft, melodic chime echoed through the silent cabin as the system interface flashed green: ACCESS GRANTED. DOWNLOAD INITIATED.
