Chapter 10 - Dawn of the Vanguard

The morning sun crested the horizon, painting the valleys of the estate in brilliant shades of gold and amber. The bulldozers from the Meridian Group sat idle at the main gates, their drivers standing confused beside their heavy machinery as police tape sealed off the entire property.
Arthur sat on the stone steps of the grand front porch, holding a steaming cup of coffee in one hand while his other arm wrapped tightly around Leo’s shoulders. The boy was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, watching the police officers carry boxes of evidence out from the subterranean vault entrance.
Hannah walked up the steps, handing Arthur a final incident report clipboard. "The federal marshals have frozen all offshore accounts. Vanguard Industries is officially under receivership pending a federal audit. Your brother and your wife are facing multiple counts of kidnapping, financial fraud, and attempted murder."
Arthur looked down at the paper, then out across the sprawling estate that had once felt like a gilded cage. For the first time in three years, the air didn't taste like ash. It tasted like freedom.
"Thank you, Hannah," Arthur said softly, offering a genuine, tired smile. "For everything."
Leo looked up at his father, his eyes bright with a resilient, unbroken spark. "Dad? Can we go get pancakes now? Real ones, with chocolate chips?"
May you like
Arthur chuckled, pulling his son close and kissing the top of his head.
"More than pancakes, buddy," Arthur said, standing up and looking toward the open road ahead. "We're going to get a whole new life."
