Chapter 12 - The Phantom in the Archives

By afternoon, the estate was swarming with state investigators, crime scene technicians, and curious reporters pressing against the outer gates. To escape the chaos, Arthur took Leo up to the third-floor library—the only room in the massive house untouched by the morning's violence.
As Hannah examined the old mahogany bookshelves looking for hidden wall panels, a sharp click echoed from behind a sliding ladder track. A hidden compartment sprang open, revealing an old-fashioned reel-to-reel tape recorder and a stack of personal journals belonging to Victoria’s late mother, Eleanor.
"Look at the date on this tape," Hannah said, holding up a magnetic tape spool labeled Project Lazarus - Phase One. "This predates your marriage to Victoria by five years. They didn't just happen to target you, Arthur. You were chosen."
Arthur pressed the play button on the portable deck. The vintage machine hummed, the slow, rhythmic spinning of the reels filling the quiet room before a familiar, cold voice echoed from the built-in speaker.
“If Arthur ever discovers the true source of the Vanguard shipping wealth, everything collapses,” Victoria’s mother whispered on the tape. “We must ensure the bloodline remains intertwined. Victoria will marry him, and if an heir threatens the structure, the vault will swallow him just as it swallowed the truth.”

Leo shuddered, gripping the edge of the wooden table. "They planned it before I was even born, didn't they?"
"Yes," Arthur said, his jaw locked in cold fury. "But they miscalculated one thing. They forgot that children raised in the dark learn how to listen to the walls."
