Chapter 6 - Checkmate in the Dark

"Impressive, Hannah," Julian said, his voice echoing smoothly off the concrete walls. "I always knew hiring you for the East Wing renovation was a risk, but I didn't realize you were quite so resourceful."

Arthur stepped in front of Leo and Hannah, his fists clenched. "It's over, Julian. We have the financial ledgers, the wire transfers, and the audio confessions. The entire federal task force is already tracking those accounts."

Julian laughed softly, shaking his head. "Arthur, you still don't understand how the world works. Federal task forces are funded by politicians. Politicians are funded by foundations. And Vanguard Foundation owns half the state senate."

Julian raised the black remote control, pressing a large red button on its face.

High above them, a loud mechanical whine filled the air. The heavy steel door of the vault slowly slid shut, the pneumatic locks engaging with a definitive, inescapable clack.

"What did you do?" Hannah demanded, rushing to the keypad and frantically pressing buttons. The screen flashed solid red: SYSTEM LOCKED FROM EXTERNAL TERMINAL.

"This vault is a classified fallout shelter built during the Cold War," Julian said through the thick reinforced glass observation port built into the door. His face appeared distorted and distant through the pane. "It’s completely EMP-proof, soundproof, and sealed against biological agents. Once the air scrubbers cycle down in thirty minutes, the oxygen levels will drop to zero."

Victoria stepped into view beside Julian, smiling coldly through the glass. "Sleep well, darling. It’s what you do best."

The lights inside the vault flickered once, then died entirely, plunging the room into absolute, suffocating darkness.
