Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

The cool night air hit their faces like a splash of cold water. They had emerged behind the old carriage house, nestled on the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the sprawling valley below. In the distance, the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen police cruisers were winding their way up the private estate road.

"Dad! Look!" Leo pointed down toward the main courtyard of the mansion.

Julian and Victoria were sprinting toward a sleek black helicopter idling on the private helipad, carrying heavy duffel bags stuffed with cash and passports.

"They're escaping!" Hannah shouted.

"Not on my watch," Arthur said, his eyes hardening into a cold, unbreakable resolve. He spotted an old four-wheel-all-terrain utility vehicle parked near the carriage house stables, the keys still dangling in the ignition.

"Get in!" Arthur ordered, opening the driver's side door.

Hannah bundled Leo into the passenger seat and jumped into the back. Arthur slammed his foot on the accelerator, sending the utility vehicle roaring across the gravel driveway, cutting straight across the lawn to intercept the helipad before the chopper could lift off.

Julian was already inside the cabin, pulling the door shut as the rotor blades began to spin faster, kicking up a blinding gale of dust and grass.

Arthur didn't slow down. He drove the utility vehicle straight up the ramp of the helipad, slamming the front bumper directly into the landing skid of the helicopter just as it lifted two feet off the ground.

The impact shuddered through the aircraft, sending the fuselage spinning violently sideways. The pilot panicked, cutting the throttle as the helicopter crashed back down onto the concrete pad with a deafening screech of bent metal and shattering glass.

Arthur leaped out of the utility vehicle, sprinting across the tarmac and yanking the helicopter door open.

Julian scrambled backward, his face bruised and pale, clutching a leather briefcase to his chest. Victoria was huddled in the corner, sobbing hysterically as the rotor blades slowly wound down to a dead stop.

"It's over, Julian," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he reached into the cabin and dragged his brother out onto the concrete by his collar.

"Arthur... wait... we're family," Julian choked out, staring up into the eyes of the man he had betrayed.

"You stopped being family the day you buried my son in the dark," Arthur whispered.

The screech of police sirens finally overwhelmed the sound of the wind. A dozen armed officers poured across the helipad, weapons drawn, surrounding the aircraft and placing both Julian and Victoria in heavy steel handcuffs.
