Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Tunnel

The subterranean air was thick with the scent of damp earth, rust, and centuries of forgotten history. The only illumination came from the narrow beam of a flashlight app on Arthur’s phone, casting long, writhing shadows against the stone walls.

"Are you okay, buddy?" Arthur knelt beside Leo, checking his son's thin arms and hollow cheeks.

"I'm cold, Dad," Leo whispered, leaning his head against his father's chest. "But I knew you'd come. I heard you walking through the hall every night before you went to sleep. I wanted to yell out, but Victoria said if I made a sound, she'd hurt you."

Hannah’s jaw tightened, tears shimmering in her eyes. "Those monsters are going to pay for every single second of this. We have the audio files backed up on your phone, right Arthur?"

Arthur tapped his coat pocket, feeling the hard rectangular outline of his smartphone. "Yes. The moment we hit cell service outside the estate perimeter, I'm uploading the files directly to the federal prosecutor’s office and the financial crimes division. Julian’s entire empire is built on stolen municipal bonds and fraudulent shell companies. The wall was just the beginning."

A sudden metallic clanging echoed from the top of the iron ladder behind them. A muffled blow hit the hatch door.

"They found the secondary access!" Hannah exclaimed, grabbing a heavy iron pipe lying near an old workbench.

"They won't get through this hatch easily; it's reinforced cast iron from the 1920s," Arthur said, shining his light down the long, winding brick tunnel. "We keep moving. The carriage house exit is fifty yards ahead."

As they hurried down the damp corridor, the walls began to change. The old brickwork gave way to modern concrete reinforcements—smooth, freshly poured panels that looked completely out of place in a nineteenth-century foundation.

Arthur slowed his pace, shining the flashlight beam against the side of the tunnel. Embedded in the concrete was a heavy steel door marked with a digital keypad and a bio-metric scanner.

"What is this?" Hannah muttered, running her fingers over the smooth metal casing. "This wasn't on the original mansion blueprints."

"It's a safe room," Leo said quietly, his eyes widening in recognition. "Victoria and Uncle Julian used to come down here every Tuesday after dropping my food. They kept files here. Big metal boxes full of cash and passports."

Arthur stared at the keypad. He looked at his brother's initials—J.V.—engraved on the side of the scanner plate. Julian Vanguard. Nothing in this house was what it seemed.
