Chapter 7 - The Emergency Protocol

"Don't panic! Stay close to the wall!" Arthur shouted, sweeping his hands across the darkness until he made contact with Hannah’s shoulder.

"My flashlight!" Hannah fumbled through her utility belt, her fingers snapping open a high-intensity tactical LED torch. A brilliant white beam sliced through the darkness, illuminating the server racks and the central desk.

"Is everyone okay?" Arthur asked, pulling Leo close to his side.

"I'm scared, Dad," Leo whimpered, his small frame shivering.

"We're going to get out of here, buddy. I promise," Arthur said, though his mind was racing frantically. The air was already feeling slightly heavier, the temperature dropping as the climate control systems shut down.

Hannah slammed her heavy iron pipe against the reinforced glass observation port. It didn't even scratch the surface. "Bulletproof laminated polycarbonate. It takes a specialized thermal lance to cut through this stuff."

"There has to be a manual override inside," Arthur said, frantically searching the desk drawers. He dumped files, folders, and stationery onto the floor until his hand brushed against a heavy metallic toggle switch mounted underneath the desktop.

"Hannah, look at this!"

Hannah rushed over, shining her light under the desk. A series of heavy copper cables ran from the toggle switch directly into the base of the server racks.

"It's an auxiliary generator bypass," Hannah said, her eyes lighting up with sudden hope. "If we trip this switch while simultaneously short-circuiting the main circuit breaker on the server rack, it will force the facility’s emergency ventilation dampers to pop open."

"Do it," Arthur commanded.

Hannah didn't hesitate. She ripped open the casing of the primary server rack with her bare hands, exposing a tangled mess of high-voltage wiring. She handed the toggle switch wire to Arthur. "On three! When I cross these two live wires, you pull the switch with everything you've got!"

"One... two... three!"

Hannah slammed the live copper wires together. A shower of brilliant blue sparks exploded from the server rack, illuminating the room in strobing flashes of electric fire.

Arthur pulled the heavy metallic toggle switch with all his weight.

CRACK.

A loud electrical pop echoed through the ceiling. For a second, nothing happened. Then, with a pneumatic hiss of compressed air, a large square ventilation grate high on the back wall of the vault popped open, flooding the room with cool, fresh air from the outside world.
