Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Curses

The federal marshal’s cruiser kicked up a cloud of white dust as it rolled down the long gravel drive, leaving Arthur, Leo, and Hannah standing in the crisp morning air. Though Victoria and Julian were safely locked behind the steel bars of the county detention center, the true weight of the Vanguard legacy was only now beginning to settle on Arthur’s shoulders.
Inside the mansion, forensic accountants were tearing through the main office, unsealing floor safes and confiscating digital hard drives. Among the recovered paperwork was an old, leather-bound safety deposit box ledger dating back to the death of Arthur’s father twenty-four years ago.
Hannah wiped soot from her forehead, carrying a weathered manila envelope toward the porch steps where Arthur and Leo sat. "You’re going to want to look at this, Arthur. It’s not just about corporate embezzlement or your brother's offshore accounts. This goes back to how your father actually died."
Arthur took the envelope, his fingers brushing the coarse paper. Inside was an autopsy report that had been quietly buried under layers of judicial seals, alongside a handwritten confession letter signed by their family physician, Dr. Marcus Vance, who had mysteriously vanished two decades ago.
"They didn't just steal my company and lock my son away," Arthur muttered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as his eyes scanned the faded ink. "They poisoned my father to force early control of the trust, and Julian used the exact same lethal paralytic to stage Leo’s medical crisis three years ago."

Leo leaned closer, resting his chin on his father’s arm. "Is that why Uncle Julian always told me that family secrets are heavy things, Dad? Because they’re made of poison?"
"They stop today," Arthur vowed, pulling his son closer against his chest.
