Chapter 8 - Breaking the Surface

"We got it!" Leo shouted, pointing up at the open vent.

"It's too high to reach," Hannah said, measuring the distance. "It's at least twelve feet up."

"Use the server rack casing as a ladder," Arthur instructed, grabbing the heavy metal frame and tipping it forward until it crashed against the back wall, forming a makeshift ramp.

"Go, Leo! Climb!" Arthur boosted his son up the angled metal frame. Leo scrambled up the rungs like a spider, reaching the open ventilation shaft and pulling himself through into the cool night air outside.

"Hannah, you next," Arthur insisted.

"Not without you, Arthur. There's only one rope in my kit—we have to pull each other up."

Behind them, the reinforced steel door shuddered. A muffled sound of heavy machinery grinding against the outer lock echoed through the vault. Julian and his security team were bringing in a hydraulic drill to breach the door manually.

"They're cutting through!" Arthur yelled. "Climb, Hannah!"

Hannah scrambled up the metal frame, sliding through the vent just as a deafening screech of tearing metal echoed from the front door. Sparks began to shower through the cracks of the reinforced glass.

Arthur grabbed the edge of the ventilation shaft, pulling his weight upward. Just as his boots cleared the lower rim, a massive explosion rocked the vault below. The hydraulic drill had breached the inner seals, and a wave of superheated gas and smoke billowed upward.

Arthur hauled himself through the vent, grabbing the heavy iron grille and pulling it shut behind him just as a gloved hand reached up into the shaft.

They were out.
