Chapter 19 - Ashes and Foundations

The following week, the demolition crews from the Meridian Group finally arrived at the Vanguard estate—not to build luxury condominiums, but to tear down the cursed East Wing and the subterranean vault where Leo had survived the dark.

Arthur stood on the lawn, watching the massive yellow excavator swing its heavy steel wrecking ball into the brick masonry of the mansion. With every deafening crash, the physical ghosts of Victoria, Julian, and the dark history of the family dissolved into a cloud of rising dust.

"What do you want to build here instead, Dad?" Leo asked, holding a small wooden model airplane they had bought together in town that morning.

"I was thinking a public park," Arthur replied, looking down at his son with a warm, steady smile. "A place with open fields, sunlight, and no hidden rooms anywhere in sight."

Hannah walked up, handing Arthur the finalized deed transfers and federal restitution documents. "The courts cleared all remaining liens. The Vanguard Foundation assets are officially being converted into a trust fund for child rescue and rehabilitation. Your family name means something entirely different now."

Arthur signed the final document with a steady hand, watching the afternoon sun break through the clearing smoke over the valley.
