Chapter 2 - SECRETS IN THE BLOOD"We move now," I snarled, the icy control snapping completely.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He slammed his hand onto the master console, activating the red alert protocols across the compound. "All units, code red! Secure St. Jude's Memorial Hospital! Target is an infiltrator holding the principal's son!"
As the subterranean base roared to life—armor plating locking over the reinforced glass, weapons lockers springing open, and operatives rushing to their transport vehicles—my mind raced.
Why Jake?
For nineteen years, Rebecca had kept Jake away from me, convincing him I was a boring logistics executive. I had allowed it, believing that keeping him in the light, far away from the blood and shadows of my criminal empire, was the only way to keep him safe. But if Viktor Vance was back, and if he was hunting for something inside my son...
What did Rebecca know that she never told me?
My phone buzzed a final time before we hit the elevators. A text message from Dmitri:
“You have twenty minutes to bring me the Black Ledger, Gabriel. Walk into the hospital alone, or watch your son bleed out on live feed.”
The Black Ledger.
The name hit me like a physical blow. It was the master database containing the identities, bank accounts, and fail-safes of every high-ranking politician, cartel boss, and intelligence asset across three continents. I had locked it away a decade ago, believing I was the only one who knew its digital encryption key.
Or so I thought.
"Sir, our chopper is prepped," Marcus reported, pulling on his tactical vest. "We can breach the third-floor ICU within twelve minutes. We'll take Dmitri down before he knows what hit him."
"No," I said, grabbing my customized matte-black tactical rifle from the rack. "Dmitri wants me to walk in. If we storm the building with a full assault team, he'll slit Jake's throat out of spite before we reach the door."
"Then what's the play, boss? You can't just hand over the Black Ledger. That thing is the nuclear launch code of the underworld. If Viktor gets his hands on it, every government and syndicate on Earth will bow to him."

I looked down at the security monitor. On the screen, Dmitri was tracing the edge of the cold steel scalpel along my son's bandaged neck. Jake groaned in his sleep, a heartbreaking sound of pure pain.
"I'm not giving him the ledger, Marcus," I replied, my eyes narrowing into dead, freezing slits. "I'm going to give him a trap he'll never climb out of."
