Chapter 5 - THE GENETIC VAULTThe realization hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

All these years, I thought Rebecca was just a bitter ex-wife who wanted to hide my criminal underworld from our son to punish me. I thought her new family of thugs and cowards were just low-life scumbags looking for a target on Christmas morning.

I was blind.

"The beating," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly, seismic whisper. "They weren't just torturing him for fun. They were trying to draw blood. They needed a fresh sample to verify the genetic sequence."

"Bingo," Dmitri grinned, his thumb still resting steadily on the detonator. "Rebecca found out last month that the encryption key to the global database matches Jake’s genetic markers. The old man wants his empire back, Gabriel. And to unlock it, we need your son's marrow."

On the hospital bed, Jake stirred. His eyes fluttered open, glassy and bruised.

"Dad...?" he whispered, his voice cracking with agony as he tried to lift his head. "Get out... it's a trap..."

"Quiet, kid," Dmitri snapped, pressing the barrel of a suppressed pistol against Jake's temple. "Your father is about to make a very important career decision."

I looked at my son. The boy I had tried so hard to protect from my dark world. The boy who had crawled into my warehouse with blood covering his face, believing his father was just a logistics manager. Now, he was the living, breathing vault to the most dangerous database on Earth.

"Let him go, Dmitri," I said quietly, slowly sliding my rifle off my shoulder and letting it clatter to the hospital floor.

"Hands behind your head, Gabriel. Interlock your fingers," Dmitri ordered.

I complied, stepping forward slowly. "The ledger is backed up on a secure satellite relay. If you kill Jake, the encryption self-destructs instantly. You won't get a single byte of data. You need him alive as much as I do."

Dmitri narrowed his eyes, calculating the risk. "You're bluffing."

"Try me," I challenged, staring directly into his eyes. "Shoot him now, and you die in this room with empty hands."

For a tense, agonizing moment, the only sound in the room was the beeping heart monitor. Dmitri’s jaw clenched. He weighed his options, his finger trembling slightly on the trigger.

Then, the door behind Dmitri flew off its hinges with a tremendous crash.
