Chapter 6 - THE RECKONING AT ST. JUDE'SMarcus and the shadow-units didn't wait for a polite invitation.

Flash-bang grenades flooded the room in a blinding white flash and a deafening roar. Dmitri shrieked, blinded and disoriented, his grip on the detonator slipping for a split second as he stumbled backward.

That split second was all I needed.

I lunged forward, tackling Dmitri hard across the linoleum floor. We crashed into the medical cart, sending scalpels, syringes, and monitors smashing into a thousand pieces. Dmitri swung his pistol at my face, but I ducked beneath the blow, driving my fist straight into his solar plexus with every ounce of rage I had stored up since Christmas morning.

Dmitri gasped, coughing up blood.

Marcus was already at the hospital bed, cutting the wires of the C4 explosives strapped to Jake's chest with a pair of tactical wire-cutters.

"Timer disarmed! We're clear!" Marcus shouted over the chaos, carefully lifting the heavy explosive device off my son's body and tossing it into a lead-lined containment bag.

I pinned Dmitri to the floor, my hands wrapped tightly around his throat. "Where is Viktor? Tell me right now, or I swear to God I'll finish what I started fifteen years ago!"

Dmitri coughed, a bloody, defiant smile spreading across his ruined face. "You... you're too late, Gabriel... Viktor is already at your warehouse. He didn't come for the ledger... he came for the core."

Before I could demand answers, a sudden, blinding flash lit up the night sky outside the hospital window.

A massive explosion echoed from across the city.
