Chapter 3 - THE WOLF AT THE DOORThe night air over the city was freezing, the wind howling through the concrete canyons as our unmarked chopper touched down on the rooftop of St. Jude's Memorial Hospital.

I stepped out first, the rotors kicking up a flurry of loose snow that danced in the amber glow of the emergency lights. Behind me, Marcus and four of my elite shadow-units moved with absolute, terrifying silence. No wasted movements. No hesitation. Just predators entering a killing floor.

"Perimeter secured," whispered a shadow-unit operative code-named Wraith through the comms. "All stairwells blocked. No exits for the target."

"Hold your positions until I give the word," I commanded, adjusting the suppressor on my rifle. "If I don't check in within ten minutes, breach every entrance and leave no survivors except Dmitri."

I pushed open the heavy steel door leading down into the stairwell and descended into the hospital.

The corridors of the third floor were eerily quiet. The flickering fluorescent lights hummed a low, ominous tune. Blood had been scrubbed from the lobby, but the antiseptic smell couldn't mask the metallic tang of violence that still hung in the air.

Room 304.

The door was slightly ajar. A thin strip of yellow light spilled out onto the linoleum floor.

I paused outside, listening. I could hear the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor, alongside a low, raspy chuckle that sent a shiver down my spine.

"I knew you'd come, Gabriel," Dmitri's voice drifted through the crack in the door, smooth and dripping with malice. "You were always predictable when it came to bloodlines. Come on in. The door is unlocked."

I didn't hesitate. I kicked the door open with a deafening crash, raising my rifle in a split-second sweep.

Dmitri stood beside the bed. His hand wasn't holding a scalpel anymore; it was wrapped around a heavy-duty detonator. And strapped to Jake’s chest beneath the hospital gown was a tightly wired package of C4 explosives, the digital timer blinking a glowing red countdown: 04:12... 04:11...

"Drop the gun, old friend," Dmitri smiled, his scarred face twisting into a hideous grin. "Or we all become stardust."
