Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL"You always did love dramatic entrances, Dmitri," I said, keeping my weapon steady, my finger hovering millimeters from the trigger. "Too bad you forgot how a sniper zeroed in on your coordinates operates."

Dmitri’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He glanced toward the window.
From the shadows outside the third-story window, a laser dot flickered across the glass, landing squarely on the center of Dmitri's forehead. Wraith was in position on the exterior scaffolding.
"Don't bother looking at your sniper insurance," Dmitri recovered quickly, pressing his thumb harder against the detonator trigger. "This dead-man switch is wired directly to my heartbeat and a tilt-sensor. If I drop, or if my heart stops, the circuit completes. Jake goes up, and the Black Ledger goes with him."
I lowered the rifle an inch, signaling Wraith to hold fire via a subtle hand gesture.
"What do you want, Dmitri?" I demanded, stepping further into the room. "Viktor is dead. I put him in the ground fifteen years ago. Who is pulling your strings?"
"Viktor never died, Gabriel," Dmitri laughed softly, stepping closer to Jake’s unconscious body. "You were arrogant. You thought a simple execution could wipe out a dynasty. When you betrayed him, you didn't just steal his empire—you stole his legacy. But Viktor was smart. He anticipated your betrayal long before it happened."
Dmitri gestured toward Jake with his chin.
"You think Rebecca hated you? You think she married you out of love all those years ago? Rebecca was Viktor’s most trusted operative. She planted herself in your bed to find the one thing you kept hidden from the entire world: a biological failsafe."
The room seemed to spin.

A biological failsafe.
"The Black Ledger isn't a digital drive, Gabriel," Dmitri whispered, his eyes gleaming with psychotic triumph. "It's encrypted inside human DNA. Specifically... the DNA of your son."
