Chapter 14 - The Stranger’s Claim"You have your mother's eyes, Grace," the man said, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely devoid of warmth. "And stubbornness. She always did know how to hide things where nobody would ever think to look."

I stood my ground, my hands resting firmly on the back of the mahogany armchair. "Who are you? And how do you know my name?"

The man stepped closer, ignoring the trembling attorney entirely. "My name is Julian Vance. And according to the blood pact your grandfather tried to erase twenty-three years ago, I own half of everything you’re standing on."

The room seemed to drop ten degrees. I remembered the photograph I found in my mother's hidden journal—the handsome young man standing beside her. The man whose face I couldn't identify.

"You're the man from the photograph," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking through my veins. "You're my father."

Julian offered a bitter, humorless smile. "I'm the man your grandfather tried to assassinate the night your mother 'died.' And now that Arthur Caldwell is old and weak, and Vanessa is rotting in a prison cell, I’ve come to collect what was stolen from me."
