I looked at the legal documents piled high on the desk. They thought I was still just a naive former maid who would fold under pressure.

They forgot one crucial detail: I had spent my entire life surviving in the dark.
"I accept your terms," I said quietly.
Julian’s eyes flashed with triumph. He slid the thick contract across the table. "Smart girl. Sign on the dotted line."
I picked up the heavy fountain pen. I didn't hesitate. I signed my name with the exact same bold strokes I had used weeks before.
Julian chuckled, pulling the document toward him and flipping through the pages to check my signature. But as his eyes scanned the final addendum page, his triumphant smile froze. The color drained entirely from his face.
"What... what is this?" Julian stammered, his hands shaking as he read the fine print.
I leaned back in my chair, folding my hands neatly on the table. "You forgot to check the original corporate charter from 1954, Julian. Section four explicitly states that any transfer of voting shares executed by a blood heir requires a unanimous two-thirds ratification from the independent family trust board—which is currently chaired by me, and proxy-held by old Thomas."

Thomas stepped forward from the shadows, flashing a cold, satisfied grin as he dropped a heavy stack of certified verification papers onto the desk.
"Checkmate, Mr. Vance," Thomas said softly.
