Chapter 3 - The DNA of BetrayalRichard carried the heavy ledger back down to the grand library, placing it heavily on the mahogany desk. Vanessa hovered over his shoulder like a vulture, her eyes darting across the yellowed pages.

"Even if this document is real," Vanessa hissed, her voice venomous, "papers don't prove biology. Anyone can find an old family crest. She’s a nobody from a foster home! A gutter rat!"
"We test it," a cold, deep voice echoed from the doorway.
We all turned. Standing in the entrance was Arthur Caldwell—Richard’s aging, formidable father, summoned by Thomas's urgent phone call. The patriarch of the family leaned heavily on his silver-headed cane, his piercing blue eyes fixing directly on me. He didn't look at Vanessa; he didn't look at Richard. He just stared at my face.
"Bring me the medical kit from the study," Arthur commanded.
Ten minutes later, a private family doctor, hastily bribed and dragged out of bed in the middle of the night, administered a rapid buccal swab DNA test right there in the library. The tension in the room was so thick you could slice it with a knife. Vanessa was pacing back and forth, biting her nails down to the quick, muttering under her breath.
"If this is a scam, I'll see every single one of you in prison," Vanessa spat.
Two hours later, the portable lab printer whirred to life. The doctor stared at the paper, his eyes widening in disbelief. He handed the report silently to Arthur Caldwell.

"Match probability," Arthur read aloud, his voice breaking. "Ninety-nine point nine-nine percent. Grace... you are my flesh and blood."
