I stood at the top of the grand staircase, looking down at the sea of people who now looked up to me not with fear or arrogance, but with absolute respect.

I reached up and touched my mother's silver necklace resting securely against my collarbone.

Vanessa was behind bars. Julian was awaiting federal trial. The old, corrupt patriarchy of the Caldwell family had bent the knee to a new, unbreakable spirit. They had locked doors, cut my hair, and tried to strip away my dignity, never realizing that true strength can never be locked away.
