Chapter 14 - The Corporate Blitz

Within twenty-four hours, the financial news networks caught wind of the storm.

MERCER HOLDINGS FACES SUDDEN LIQUIDITY FREEZE; FEDERAL AUDIT LAUNCHED OVER HISTORICAL ASSET TRANSFERS.

The headlines blinked across television screens in airports, boardrooms, and stock exchanges across the country. Board members who had spent years smiling at Ethan during quarterly galas suddenly stopped answering his calls. Investors panicked, pulling back lines of credit.

By Friday afternoon, Ethan was locked in his study, surrounded by stacks of financial reports, legal briefs, and digital spreadsheets.

The door opened quietly.

Hannah walked in carrying a tray with a fresh cup of black coffee and a plate of simple toast. She set it down on the desk, gently pulling the digital tablet out of his hands.

"You haven't slept in thirty-six hours, Ethan," she said softly.

"Julian wants to break the company," Ethan rubbed his temples, a headache throbbing behind his eyes. "If the federal audit holds up, we lose the liquidity reserves. We lose the contractors building the estate. I might even lose the patents to the software we developed."

"Let him take it," Hannah said calmly.

Ethan looked up, blinking in surprise. "Take it? Hannah, this is everything I spent ten years building. It's our future."

"No," Hannah corrected, stepping closer and placing both hands on his shoulders. "Our future is out in the yard, chasing butterflies with a four-year-old girl. You built a billion-dollar empire out of anger, Ethan—to prove to your mother, to society, and to the world that you were worthy. But you don't need a billion dollars to be worthy to us."

Ethan stared at her, the frantic panic in his chest slowly giving way to a profound, anchoring calm.

"What do you suggest we do?" he asked.

"We don't fight Julian in the boardroom on his terms," Hannah smiled, a brilliant, dangerous spark in her hazel eyes. "We use the paperwork your mother left behind. Because if Julian's family funded your startup illegally through concealed debt... that means they were partners in the concealment all along. Which makes their current lawsuit an admission of fraud."
