Chapter 23 - A Knock at Midnight

Back at the Westchester estate, the household had settled into a quiet rhythm by midnight. Avery was fast asleep in her room behind the secret bookshelf passage, dreaming of butterflies and yellow doors.
In the master suite, Hannah and Ethan had just turned off the lights when a sharp, frantic chime echoed from the front security gate intercom.
Ethan frowned, sitting up immediately. He grabbed his robe, glancing at the security monitor by the bedside table.
On the grainy black-and-white screen, standing outside the wrought-iron gates in the pouring rain, was a figure in a soaked trench coat.
It wasn't Julian Vance. And it wasn't Jocelyn.
It was a young woman with matted blonde hair, clutching a shivering terrier puppy against her chest, staring directly into the security lens with wild, terrified eyes.
"Ethan," Hannah whispered, looking over his shoulder. "Do you know her?"
May you like
"No," Ethan muttered, his jaw tightening. "Lev, are you seeing this?"
The intercom crackled to life with Lev’s gruff voice. "Already on it, Mr. Mercer. Security is pulling her file. She bypassed the perimeter sensors using the old drainage tunnel from the ravine."
