Later that night, after Avery had finally fallen asleep upstairs clutching her teddy bear, Ethan and Hannah walked out onto the front porch together.
The snow fell softly around them in a quiet, dancing curtain of white. The world was silent, peaceful, and entirely at rest.
Ethan wrapped his heavy wool coat around Hannah’s shoulders, pulling her tight against him as they looked out over the sprawling, snow-dusted grounds.
"Merry Christmas, Hannah," Ethan whispered against her hair.
"Merry Christmas, Ethan," she replied, looking up at him with eyes full of a love that had survived betrayal, poverty, corporate wars, and five years of winter shadows.
